Veggie Tales: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything only made $4.2 million in its first weekend in theatres. Alvin and the Chipmunks stayed in Top Five in its 5th week.

Twentieth Century Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks managed to stay in the Top 5 for its fifth week in theatres.

The hybrid animated/live-action movie, starring Jason Lee, confounded critics by hanging onto the #5 spot on the box office chart, according to Box Office Mojo. It made another $9.3 million, bringing its five-week total to $187.9 million. Considering the flick cost Twentieth Century Fox $60 million to make, that's some sweet profit for the studio.

There has already been talk about a possible Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel; the only question is what Fox will do with the Terrible Trio as an encore.

Pirates Who Don't Do Anything Walks the Plank

Universal's Veggie Tales: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything did virtually nothing at the box office. The flick made just $4.2 million in its first weekend in 1,337 theatres. The previous Veggie Tales movie, 2002's Jonah, did more with less: the Biblical adaptation pulled $6.2 million from 940 theatres. Either way, that's a kick in the teeth for the Veggie Tales crew. Either that, or audiences prefer seeing more blatantly Biblical stories from their legumes.

Looking down the list, Disney's Enchanted added another $1.8 million to its coffers while sitting at #18. The hybrid animation/live-action flick has made $122.3 million in its 8 weeks in theatres. Not anywhere close to being blockbuster territory, but the Mouse House claims that they're pleased with Enchanted's numbers. So far, things are looking good for another "animation renaissance" at Walt Disney's legendary animation unit.

Next up for Disney will be another pair of animated "princess" stories: Ron Clements and John Musker's The Princess and the Frog (due in 2009) and Glen Keane's Rapunzel, due in 2010.

Bee Movie, Beowulf Running Out of Buzz

DreamWorks Animation's Bee Movie claws in at #25, adding $300,799 to its box office haul. It appears Katzenberg and Company are trying to squeeze the last dregs from this flick, since there's no hope that it will make back its $150 million studio costs from its domestic box office. It's made $125.5 million after 11 weeks in theatres.

However, Bee Movie fared a lot better at the box office than another Paramount offering. Beowulf made $133,273 in its 9th week in theatres. Its total of $81.7 million is an even more bitter blow, considering the flick also cost its studio $150 million to make.

Extra Tidbit: Rapunzel director Glen Keane is the son of Family Circus creator Bil Keane. The younger Keane was also John Lasseter's mentor at Disney.
