The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the 2007 Prim Time Emmy Nominations. Here are the animated contenders.

This morning, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences released the nomination list for the 2007 Prime Time Emmy Awards, which will be held on Sunday, September 16th at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.

Here are the categories which feature animated shows in the nominee list, along with my barely literate meanderings on who might actually get the award.

Outstanding Animated Program (Programming Less Than One Hour)

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender – Episode: “City Of Walls And Secrets” (Nickelodeon Animation Studio)
  • Robot Chicken – Episode: “Lust For Puppets” (ShadowMachine Films)
  • South Park – Episode: “Make Love, Not Warcraft” (Central Productions)
  • SpongeBob SquarePants – Episode: “Bummer Vacation / Wig Struck” (Nickelodeon Animation Studio with United Plankton Pictures, Inc.)
  • The Simpsons – Episode: “The Haw-Hawed Couple” (Gracie Films with 20th Century Fox)

How to handicap this one? Off-hand, this usually comes down to a battle between South Park and The Simpsons. Of course, there's no huge controversy like last year's "Trapped in the Closet" to confuse voters. The Academy may decide that The Simpsons' Emmy shelf is full, and reward Trey Parker and Matt Stone for 10 years of South Park (And a slightly less controversial episode).

Spongebob Squarepants is always a safer choice if voters still think South Park is too outré to be honoured. Avatar: The Last Airbender and Robot Chicken are still too new to be serious contenders; besides Airbender might not be "Amurrican" enough for the Emmy.

Outstanding Animated Program (Programming One Hour Or More)

  • Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends – Episode: “Good Wilt Hunting” (Cartoon Network Studios)
  • Hellboy Animated: Sword Of Storms (Starz Media with Revolution Studios)
  • Secrets Of The Deep (Impossible Pictures with Discovery Channel)
  • Camp Lazlo – Episode: “Where’s Lazlo?” (Cartoon Network Studios)

This one's hard to call. I'm going with Hellboy, mainly because it has the highest profile cast (and association with Guillermo Del Toro and the live-action feature film). Everyone loves it when well-known artists jump genres. Secrets of the Deep might get the nod mainly because of the Discovery Channel connection.

Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics

  • Family Guy - “Peter’s Two Dads” (Fuzzy Door Productions with Fox TV Animation) Music by Walter Murphy, Lyrics by Danny Smith
  • MADtv – "Episode 1209" Song title: "Merry Ex-Mas" (Fox with Girl Group Co.) Lyrics by Bruce McCoy, Music by Greg O'Connor, Music and Lyrics by Jim Wise
  • Saturday Night Live – Host: Justin Timberlake - Song title: "Dick In A Box" (SNL Studios in association with NBC Studios and Broadway Video), Music By Katreese Barnes, Lyrics By Andy Samberg, Lyrics By Akiva Schaffer, Music & Lyrics By Jorma Taccone, Music By Asa Taccone, Music & Lyrics By Justin Timberlake
  • Scrubs – Episode: "My Musical," Song Title: "Everything Comes Down to Poo" (NBC with ABC Studios), Lyrics by Debra Fordham, Lyrics and Music by Robert Lopez, Lyrics and Music by Jeff Marx
  • Scrubs – Episode: "My Musical," Song Title: "Guy Love" (NBC with ABC Studios), Lyrics and Music by Paul F, Lyrics by Debra Fordham

Sorry, Family Guy. I think "Dick in a Box" is going to saunter away with this one. Not only was it a "water cooler" moment during the last television season, it not only features Andy Samburg – getting his silver screen close-up in this summer's Hot Rod – but also hugely popular singer/voice actor Justin Timberlake (Shrek the Third). Will the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences want to get teenage girls' knickers in a twist when they see Timberlake going onstage to take that award? Hugh betcha!
