Someone had to take the blame for the Movie Promotion that Shut Down Boston and Cartoon Network general manager and vice president Jim Samples decided he was that guy.
Samples resigned Friday after Turner Broadcasting (the Cartoon Network's parent company) and Interference Inc. agreed to pay $2 million to the city of Boston after a marketing campaign for Aqua Teen Hunger Force resulted in police deploying their bomb squad on January 31st.
"I deeply regret the negative publicity and expense caused to our company as a result of this campaign," Samples said in an e-mail to Cartoon Network employees. "I feel compelled to step down in recognition of the gravity of the situation that occurred under my watch."
Boston police initially thought that 35 battery-powered blinking light boxes advertising Aqua Teen Hunger Force were bombs. The lights depicted a Mooninite, a character from the show, giving passersby the finger.
The boxes had also appeared in 9 other American cities without incident. However, police in other cities removed them in the wake of the Boston reaction.
