I'm can't decide whether or not I'm looking forward to MGM/The Weinstein Company's Arthur and the Invisibles. The positives: it's directed by Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, La Femme Nikita), one of my favourite directors, and the movie's based on his series of children's books. It features some solid acting talent in Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Mia Farrow and David Bowie. Pretty good so far, n'est-ce pas?

The negatives? One word: Madonna. She may be the best-selling female singer of all time but Madonna's been box office poison for 20 years now, appearing in such bombs as Shanghai Surprise, Dick Tracy and Body of Evidence. She's also Razzie Award bait, winning the Worst Actress Award two years in a row (1987 and 1988).

Madonna's also the only actor to get three Razzie Awards in one year (2002). She won Worst Supporting Actress (Die Another Day), Worst Couple (with Adrianno Giannini in Swept Away) and tied with Britney Spears for Worst Actress, again for Swept Away. With that kind of record, her mere presence in a movie is enough to qualify it as Razzie bait. I'm not even going near the presence of Snoop Dogg, star of such cinematic "classics" as Soul Plane and Bones. So yeah, I think I'm holding off until I see this sucker in theatres.

That said, the good folks at Latino Review got some new pictures of Arthur and the Invisibles, which has a limited run starting December 15 (just in time for it to qualify for the 2006 Oscars) before it goes into wide release January 12th. You can see the pics over here.
