Okay, I'm pumped for Luc Besson's upcoming (and reportedly final) movie Arthur and the Invisibles (Arthur and the Minimoys for civilized folk). Yeah, it's not your typical animated fare (there's a large live-action component) and I'm very grateful for that.
So why has this movie caught my attention? First off, no wisecracking animals! Second, director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Léon the Professional, La Femme Nikita) has a pretty smokin' filmography. Third, the cast isn't all that bad, with David Bowie, Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and Mia Farrow making up for such movie-killers as Madonna and Snoop Dogg. Fourth, I really like the trailer: it balances nicely between live-action and animation, adventure and a very non-American sense of humour. That said, I have absolutely no idea what the African warriors are doing in this movie, but hey, I'm willing to run with it.
And, the biggest reason why I'm pumped about this movie? No wise-cracking animals! Yeah, I'm repeating myself but after sitting through Ice Age 2, Over the Hedge, Open Season, Barnyard, The Ant Bully . . . need I say more?
Anyway, you can check out the trailer over here. Arthur and the Minimoys – sorry, Invisibles opens January 12, 2007.
