BCI Eclipse has announced they will release a DVD box set of The New Adventures of He-Man Volume 1 on December 26th.

The 6-DVD box set will have the first 33 (out of 65) episodes of the 1990 spin-off series, that took Adam/He-Man and his nemesis Skeletor to the future world of Primus. Extras include two documentaries, two art cards by Ed McGuinness (Superman, JLA) and Bryan Hitch (The Ultimates), plus scripts, character bios, and storyboards. In addition, the spine artwork of the box set will combine with the previous He-Man and She-Ra releases to form a distinctive mural.

The New Adventures of He-Man came out in 1990, as a last-ditch attempt to give new life to the waning He-Man and the Masters of the Universe phenomenon. The new series was very different: the new locale gave the series a more science-fiction feel, rather then the sword-and-sorcery mix of the previous series. Adam/He-Man had a leaner, more militaristic look that was very different from his original "Conan on steroids" persona.

Skeletor was altered as well: taking a cue from Frank Langella's portrayal in the 1987 live-action movie, he became a more competent and dangerous villain, whose plans occasionally succeeded. Skeletor was also given a different look, cybernetic implants and a potential love interest in the ruthless Crita. The New Adventures of He-Man also featured stronger continuity, improved writing and better animation than in the original.

Despite its strengths, The New Adventures of He-Man didn't generate much enthusiasm among Masters of the Universe's faltering fanbase. It's generally believed that the show came out ten years too early, since fans had become oversaturated with He-Man merchandise.

The MSRP for the The New Adventures of He-Man Volume 1 box set will be $49.98. There has as yet been no information released on the possible status of a Volume 2.
