Kwun Tong Magistracy in Hong Kong handed out jail terms to two men convicted of operating a website that sold bootlegged copies of anime and Japanese cartoons, said China's Xinhua news service. The site's owner received six months for selling illegal copies of copyrighted works, and an employee received four months and three months, the sentences to run concurrently.

The charges stem from arrests made on November 1, 2004, when customs officers found a man in a Kowloon district post office sending packages containing pirated DVD's. After raiding a nearby office, police found 3,000 discs.

Xinhua said this was the stiffest penalty ever handed out for bootleg DVD piracy. The service did not name the two men.

This has been the 45th conviction of persons selling illegal DVD's online since 2000, the news agency said.
