Cars a hit in China, Italy, NorwayPixar film sets box office record for best animated film opening
Disney/Pixar's Cars opens huge in China, Italy and Norway
(Source: Big Cartoon Database) (UPDATE: Looks like somebody was dicking with me. Cars' opening wasn't that spectacular. The record for best animated film to date is still Disney's The Lion King, which snagged $5.12 million in 3 weeks.) Mmm, taste that yummy crow. After confidently predicting that Cars' American-centric theme would preclude it from playing well in international markets, the animated CG flick pulled $1.2 million in its first weekend in China. That sets a record for the strongest-opening animated film in that country. Cars also kicked serious butt in Italy and Norway, opening in the top spot in both countries. It's now pulled $157.6 million in overseas gross. Other animated films didn't do as well. The partially animated Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties drew $7.2 million in 20 countries. Its overseas total is now $77.6 million. Right behind it was Monster House, which made an estimated $5.8 million from 24 countries for a total take of $29.1 million. Cars will open in Sweden and Denmark this coming weekend.
