The plot thickens. Disney/Pixar's latest animated feature Cars won the 2006 Annie Award for Best Animated Film last night at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California.

Cars composer Randy Newman also walked home with the Annie for Best Feature Music, and the Grammy for Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television and Other Visual Media.

So how is Cars winning the Annie significant?

In previous years, the Annie Award winner for Best Animated Film has always won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. This means that, barring the Oscars sending a political message to George W. Bush (in the same way the Grammys showered the Dixie Chicks with every award they could give last night), Cars has a virtual lock on that golden trophy come February 25th.

However, the biggest winner at the Annies was the much maligned DreamWorks/Aardman collaboration Flushed Away. Despite that flick bombing at the box office, it took home five awards, the most any animated flick has ever won at the Annies.

Scott Cegielski won for Best Feature Effects, Gabe Hordos scored Best Feature Character Animation, Pierre-Olivier Vincent snagged Best Feature Production Design, Sir Ian McKellen captured Best Feature Voice Work, and Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Christopher Lloyd, Joe Keenan & Will Davies won for Best Feature Writing.

Not only that, D3 America won the Best Animated Video Game award for Flushed Away: the Game.

DreamWorks also grabbed 3 awards for Over the Hedge, taking Best Feature Director (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Best Feature Character Design (Nicolas Marlet) and Best Feature Storyboarding (Gary Graham).

However, Happy Feet got some lovin' at the BAFTA awards (Britain's answer to the Oscars). The George Miller flick won Best Animated Feature Film Award, beating out both Cars and Flushed Away.

The Writers' Guild of America also got into the awards spirit last night: John Frink won Best Animated Television award for The Simpsons episode "The Italian Bob."
