Comic-Con Gets Beowulf, CoralineAnimated Films Showing at San Diego Convention July 26th - 29th
Comic conventioneers will get an eyeful of animated films when Comic-Con hits San Diego this July. Films include Coraline, Where the Wild Things Are and Beowulf.
(Source: www.comingsoon.net) Going to San Diego sometime next month? Definitely put Comic-Con into your plans, if you haven't already. The comic convention has released an initial list of films screening there between July 26th and 29th, and what an eye-popping list it is. Here are some of the highlights for you animation fans. Beowulf: I've been talking up this flick for seven months now, and it has serious potential as an adult-oriented animated movie. It's based on the old English poem about heroes and monsters, but adapted for the silver screen by Neil Gaiman (more on him later) and Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction). Robert Zemeckis (Polar Express, Forrest Gump) is in the director's chair while a star-studded cast emotes for the camera. I won't go into the entire list here, but it includes Anthony Hopkins, Crispin Glover, Alison Lohman, John Malkovich, Robin Wright-Penn, Brendan Gleeson, and Angelina Jolie. If you can't make Comic-Con, don't despair. Beowulf invades the silver screen on November 16th. Coraline: This appears to be Gaiman's year, since there are two films adapted from his novels showing at the Con (the other is the live-action Stardust). The first one, and of most interest to animation fans, is Laika Entertainment House's stop-motion adaptation of Gaiman's award-winning children's book Coraline. The story follows a 12-year-old girl – named Coraline, natch – who falls into an alternate world where her parents have buttons sewn on their eyes and who love her very, very much. Perhaps a bit too much . . . The movie stars the voices of Dakota Fanning (as Coraline) and Teri Hatcher (voicing dual roles as Coraline's mother). Ian McShane (DeadWood), Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French (French and Saunders) and John Hodgman (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) are also voicing roles in the flick. Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas, Fantastic Mr. Fox) is directing – and helped with the script) – and 80's geek-rockers They Might Be Giants is doing the soundtrack with Bruno Coulais. There's no concrete release date for Coraline as of yet, but it's due sometime in 2008. Where the Wild Things Are: Another award-winning children's novel gets the animated treatment, this time Maurice Sendak's classic tale of imagination. Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich) directs the tale of a boy who, after being sent to bed without supper, journeys to the land of the Wild Things and becomes their king. Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Catherine Keener (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Catherine O'Hara (A Mighty Wind), and Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain) voice roles in the flick. Warner Bros. is talking an October 3rd, 2008 release date for Where the Wild Things Are. If you want a little live-action, Comic-Con will also screen Alien vs. Predator 2: No Peace On Earth, American Gangster, Babylon A.D., Balls of Fury, The Bourne Ultimatum, Fred Claus, Get Smart, The Golden Compass, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, I Am Legend, The Incredible Hulk, Indiana Jones 4, The Invasion, Iron Man, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Resident Evil: Extinction, Speed Racer, The Strangers, Star Trek, Sunshine, Sweeney Todd, 30 Days of Night, Trick 'r Treat, and many more.
