Focus Features, a division of NBC Universal, announced today that they have won the worldwide distribution rights for the upcoming stop-motion film Coraline, based on the best-selling novel by Neil Gaiman. Laika Entertainment is producing the film, its first full-length animated feature.

Laika also announced that child star Dakota Fanning will provide the voice for the titular character, a girl who finds herself trapped in a sinister alternate universe.

Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach) will write the script, and co-direct the film with Mike Cachuela (Corpse Bride, The Incredibles). Quirky rock duo They Might Be Giants are also attached to the project.

The movie is tentatively scheduled for a 2007 theatrical release.
