Coraline finds its locationLaika film to be made in Portland warehouseLaika Entertainment sets up temporary shop in 151,000 square foot warehouse to film stop motion adaptation of Neil Gaiman novel.
(Source: Big Cartoon Database) Okay, I admit it: any news about Laika Entertainment's upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Coraline has me salivating like Pavlov's dog. Why? For one, I dig the source material. I'm a huge Gaiman fan, back when I discovered his Sandman graphic novels. Even though I didn't need the encouragement, I got it anyway when writers like Harlan Ellison and Stephen King confirmed, "This guy rocks!" And yeah, Coraline is a gorgeously creepy kids' book, which lends itself to stop-motion animation. Sure, I would've been happier if Tim Burton (or Adam Jones from Tool) was on it, but hey, it's all good. But enough ranting already. Laika Entertainment has announced that they are renting 151,000 square feet of warehouse near Hillsboro Stadium near Portland, Oregon, to serve as its interim facility. They'll be filming Coraline there, on several film stages. The crew and staff moved in last weekend. Laika also plans to hire 200 more people for its facility. Coraline hits theatres in 2008. The film will feature the voices of Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher, and Henry Selick has the director's chair. Laika also rented two floors of another northwest Portland building to make the CGI feature Jack and Ben's Animated Adventure, due in 2009. So things are looking good so far, Laika. Just don't **** up Coraline or I'll go Samuel L. Jackson on your ass. But no pressure.
