The Cartoon Network will bring Crayon Shin-chan to Adult Swim in August for a test run. FUNimation will do an all-new dub.
(Source: Toon Zone) If you needed further proof that children's programming in Japan is considered adult entertainment in North America, long-running children's anime Crayon Shin-chan will appear on The Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block this August. Yoshito Usui created and wrote the anime, which has been on Japanese television since 1992. Crayon Shin-chan follows the adventures of Shinnosuke Nohara (Shin-chan for short), a 5-year-old boy who lives with his mother and father. Shin-chan has been called "the Japanese Bart Simpson:" this is misleading since Shin-chan's behaviour is driven by innocence and ignorance, rather than deliberate mischief. FUnimation has announced that they will do an all-new dub of Crayon Shin-chan. This is important, since much of the show's humour is derived from Shin-chan's use of inappropriate language and behaviour. This is why it's taken so long for the anime to cross the Pacific, despite the show's popularity. Crayon Shin-chan's humour was previously considered untranslatable, since it's derived from Shin-Chan's mangling of Japanese language and custom, elements which North American audiences know nothing about. The interplay of language in Crayon Shin-chan is actually quite sophisticated. There are also many scenes where Shin-chan drops his pants and shows his penis or his buttocks. Crayon Shin-chan comes to Adult Swim in August. As of this writing, there is no word on specific date and time.
