Chester Gould's hard-hitting police detective is coming to DVD shelves. The early-60's cartoon version of Dick Tracy will be released in a 4-disc DVD box on September 26. This set will contain all 130 episodes, and a limited-edition comic book will be included.
This version of Dick Tracy ran from 1961-1964, and featured Everett Sloane as the voice of the famous detective. Looney Tunes legend Mel Blanc was also involved: he voiced several characters such as junior detectives Go-Go Gomez (a human version of Blanc's Speedy Gonzalez) and Jo Jitsu (a Charlie Chan parody who knew martial arts). Each 5-minute episode generally featured Tracy kicking back and letting his subordinates catch such idiosyncratic villains like Pruneface, Mumbles and B.B. Eyes.
This cartoon Dick Tracy was heavily criticized for its less-than-enlightened portrayal of minorities, and has been rarely seen since it left the airwaves in 1964. However, some episodes occasionally surfaced on Pay-Per-View digital channels.
