Chalk it up to globalization or good ol' Yankee Imperialism. Jeffrey Katzenberg says he plans to start using Indian animators for future Dreamworks animated movies.

"DreamWorks is very much looking at doing business in India," he said at the Cannes Film Festival where he was promoting their current feature Over the Hedge.

"India is a very exciting place and has potential for great animation. We've been very impressed with the Indian animation community's enthusiasm to master the constantly changing tools of CG animation. We believe this eagerness will lead to the development of a highly skilled animation community."

Of course what Katzenberg carefully didn't mention is that animating in India is also much cheaper than animating in the good old US of A. Imagi Studios made Warner Bros.' bean counters light up when Imagi said they could make the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated movie for only $35 million. Compare this to Over the Hedge's $60 million price tag, and The Incredibles, which cost Pixar $90 million (figures courtesy of IMDb). So it's not surprising that Katzenberg wants to cut costs and maximize profits.
