A Vancouver court has fined Samson Asia Music $25,000, two-and-a-half years since police discovered over 10,000 illegal DVD's, including copies of animated films Finding Nemo and Sleeping Beauty at the store.

A lawyer representing the now-defunct store pleaded guilty to 3 counts of copyright violation on May 8. Copyright infringement charges were stayed against the music store's owner, Simon Lam-Tai Lam, who has fled Canada.

On December 17, 2003, the RCMP raided the store, which operated in Lansdowne Centre Mall from 1999 to 2004. Police obtained warrants after Michael Leung, vice-president of the Long Shong Entertainment Group in Richmond, complained that the store was selling bootleg DVD's. It was one of the largest seizures of copyright violation items in Richmond.

Initially, police had charged store-owner Lam with 63 counts of violating the federal Copyright Act.
