Farce of the Penguins trailerBob Saget spoofs acclaimed documentaryBob Saget's mockumentary Farce of the Penguins has a new trailer. It underwhelms.
(Source: www.farceofthepenguins.com) Mention the name "Bob Saget" and most people will mention the smug and smarmy white-bread host of America's Funniest Home Videos, or the smug and smarmy white-bread TV dad of Full House. Veteran comedy watchers will point to his surprisingly raunchy standup routine, or his take on the hoary "Aristocrats" joke. This second version of Bob Saget is on display in his upcoming feature-length mockumentary Farce of the Penguins. The tagline: "What happens in Antarctica, stays in Antarctica." The premise is simple: give the acclaimed documentary March of the Penguins a MST3K spin by overdubbing raunchy dialogue (supplied by Saget, Christina Applegate and others) over penguin footage. Farce even ups the comparison by getting Samuel L. Jackson to narrate the proceedings, in a similar manner to March's Morgan Freeman voice-over. The question now becomes, can Saget and company sustain that joke over 90 minutes? Judging by the trailer, the answer is no. A thirty-second trailer with a grand total of two out-loud laughs? Ain't looking good, people. Not to mention that there are a lot of penguin-centric shows coming down the chute. Warner Bros' Happy Feet (due November 17) and Sony Picture Animation's Surf's Up (due next summer) are both mining similar turf. DreamWorks is even giving the Madagascar penguins their own Nickelodeon show. So yeah, there are a lot of penguin product out there in movieland, and so far, Farce isn't standing out.
