Battle For Terra Fast FactsNew Real D 3-D Animated Film Stars Evan Rachel Wood, Luke Wilson
This feature-length, computer-generated science fiction action-adventure expands on the multiple award-winning 2003 short film Terra.
Using a reverse-alien premise, Battle For Terra breaks new ground and sets aside stereotypes in a highly unusual 3-D animated film. The Story of Battle For Terra After the destruction of the Earth and the human-colonized Venus and Mars, the remaining humans search space seeking a new home. Just when supplies are about to run out, they launch an attack on the inhabitants of Terra, a planet of advanced aliens living a peaceful existence in cooperation with nature. A teenaged female Terrian (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood of Across the Universe) finds an injured human pilot (Luke Wilson of Henry Poole is Here), and together they try to end the war. Unfortunately for them, the leaders on both sides have other plans. The Cast of Battle For Terra An all-star cast provides voices for the computer-generated characters in the film. In addition to Wood and Wilson, viewers may recognize the voices of Brian Cox (The Bourne Supremacy), David Cross (She’s The Man), Justin Long (He’s Just Not That Into You), Danny Glover (Shooter), Amanda Peet (Syriana), Dennis Quaid (Vantage Point), Chris Evans (Sunshine), James Garner (The Notebook), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Mark Hamill (Star Wars), Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Vacation), Rosanna Arquette (What About Brian), and Danny Trejo (Halloween). About the 3-D Computer-Generated AnimationDirector Aristomenis Tsirbas originally created Battle For Terra in 2-D, but also used a second camera with editable stereo properties that could add a 3-D effect anytime during the postproduction process. After enjoying success on the film festival circuit and finding a distributor, Tsirbas added the stereo effect on a shot-per-shot basis in order to give the film a feeling of depth and varying perspectives, particularly in the important battle scenes. About the Music in Battle For Terra Polish-born composer Abel Korzeniowski (best known for his soundtrack from 2004’s Metropolis) created a traditional action-adventure score, but added some otherworldly sounds to represent the world of Terra. He used unusual instrumentation such as seven-foot drums and glass harmonicas to produce music that simultaneously feels familiar yet alien. Korzeniowski also composed music for the films Pogoda na jutro (2003), The Half Life of Timofey Berezin (2006), Kurc (2006), and What We Take From Each Other (2008). Film Festival AwardsBattle For Terra won awards at Ottawa International Animation Festival, Heartland Film Festival, and Giffoni Film Festival. This full-length feature film is an expanded version of Tsirbas’s 2003 seven-minute animated short Terra, which received the Director’s Choice Award at the 2004 Black Maria Film and Video Festival and the Audience Award for Favorite Animation at the 2003 Palm Springs International Short Film Festival.
