DreamWorks/Aardman's Flushed Away maintains its #3 position for the second straight week. Movie has now made $39 million at the box office.
(Source: www.boxofficemojo.com) You know it's a rough time for new movies when the Top #3 doesn't change from one week to the next. It's even more embarrassing when it's Oscar-movie season. DreamWorks/Aardman's second (and last) collaboration Flushed Away hung onto the #3 spot for the second straight week, beating out possible contenders like live-action Oscar fodder such as Stranger than Fiction and A Good Year, or the low-budget Sarah Michelle Gellar horror flick (don't call it The Grudge) The Return. Flushed Away added another $16,606,526 to the pot, making $39,827,295 over the past two weeks. Neither studio is admitting what this flick cost to make (never a good sign), but they should be cautiously optimistic about its chances. Of course, the big test for Flushed Away's staying power comes on November 17th, when Fox's Happy Feet hits theatres. Then we'll see which November animated flick reigns supreme. Personally, I'm betting on Flushed Away since I think it's the better movie, but if Robin Williams fans can tolerate dreck like RV, they'll sit for anything. Sony's Open Season dropped to #15, making $1,408,227 in its 7th week in theatres. With a total of $83,512,193 in the bag, it's well within spitting distance of making back its $85 million price tag. I think Sony Picture Animation executives are pretty happy with how Open Season has performed. Besides, family oriented animated films have a fairly lucrative second life on DVD, and this should be no exception. Expect a possible straight-to-DVD sequel for this one.
