FUNimation Productions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Navarre Corporation, has bought the rights to Harmony Gold's Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles. The series is described as the "first true sequel" to the classic series, which helped establish anime in North America.
Harmony Gold and FUNimation made the joint announcement at Comic-Con International on July 22, the day after they had finalized the deal.
Harmony Gold had announced that they were coming up with a new Robotech property back in 2004, an announcement that met with widespread skepticism. The company has produced an 88-minute movie of The Shadow Chronicles, which FUNimation hopes to show in theatres and on TV.
The storyline for Shadow Chronicles has been described as a continuation of the last episode of the original series. Apparently it revolves around the Robotic Expeditionary Force's search for Admiral Hunter and the SDF-3. There are also rumours of another adversary behind the scenes.
Shadow Chronicles was directed by Tommy Yune and Dong-Wook Lee. Some of the actors lending their voices to the feature film include Mark Hamill (Star Wars) and Chase Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). Masterson, a professional jazz vocalist, is also singing parts for her robotic character, Janice.
