FUNimation to distribute anime to the US.
(Source:Toon Zone) Top Cow's Mike Watkins revealed at WizardWorld Philadelphia this weekend that FUNimation has won the distribution rights to the Witchblade anime. According to Watkins, "The series takes place in the future, featuring an illegitimate wearer of the blade fighting evil two hundred years in the future." Witchblade is about the adventures of various characters who gain possession of a sentient, extra-terrestrial sword. It was a popular comic during the mid-90's (and shortlived show on the TNT network in 2001) before it was successfully re-imagined for the Japanese market. Animation studio GONZO is currently filming the anime, which began broadcast in April. They developed a new owner of the Witchblade, a Japanese single mother named Mazane. FUNimation is also negotiating with Cartoon Network to bring Witchblade to their Adult Swim programming block.
