Futurama fans rejoice, and Fox executives ponder seppuku. Comedy Central has ordered 13 new episodes of the Matt Groening (The Simpsons) animated TV show. The new Futurama episodes will premiere on Comedy Central in 2008, when The Cartoon Network's contract to show the original 52 episodes runs out in 2008.

A combination of strong merch sales, a hugely popular run of the original 52 episodes on The Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block, and a popular Bongo comic conspired to give the show new life.

This is the second animated TV show that Fox TV cancelled (the first was Seth Green's The Family Guy) that was revived, thanks to a successful run on Adult Swim.

All the original voice talent has resigned for the new episodes, along with the production staff. Katey Segal, who voices Leela, confirmed her involvement with Futurama's return on Craig Ferguson earlier this week.

Given the number of classic shows getting the Lazarus treatment on Adult Swim, could we be seeing new episodes ofPee-Wee's Playhouse (which will rerun on Adult Swim starting in July) one day?
