(Source: Big Cartoon Database, Cartoon Brew) (Yeah, it took me a while to jump on this story, mainly because [a]I was looking for supporting evidence, and [b] I was still going "WTF?") Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties is now the most popular animated movie in China. It made $5.8 million at the box office in 3 weeks, breaking a 12-year record. The semi-animated film, directed by Tim Hill and starring Bill Murray as the titular cat, made the equivalent of $1.74 million USD in its first weekend. It raked in $2.5 million in its second week in theatres, and another $1.25 million in its third week. The previous record-holder was Disney's The Lion King, which made $5.12 million in 3 weeks, back in 1994. Another widely-touted animated release, Disney/Pixar's Cars, made $1.35 million in its first weekend. Some theatre managers speculated that the film's disappointing opening was due to the fact that many schoolchildren were too busy finishing off their summer homework. Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties was not as successful in North American theatres. Most reviewers panned the film, and it made only $28 million in 2 months.
