Turner Classic Movies will show Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies, considered one of the finest anti-war movies ever made.
(Source: www.icv2.com) On Sunday, November 12 at 10 pm (EST, PT), Turner Classic Movies will show Isao Takahata's classic anime Grave of the Fireflies. The tragic story of two orphans trying to survive in World War II-era Japan, Grave of the Fireflies is a movie that stands alongside Hayao Miyazaki's best work, and one of the greatest movies to come out of Studio Ghibli, the animation company Miyazaki and Takahata started together. It's based on the novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, who lost his sister to malnutrition in the dying days of World War II. Grave of the Fireflies also made my list of Ten Essential Animated Films. Despite the film's failure on its 1988 theatrical release, critics like Roger Ebert have called Grave of the Fireflies one of the greatest anime movies ever made and an incredibly powerful anti-war film. If you have TCM, I would highly recommend you watch this movie, any way you can. Central Park Media has also just released a special edition DVD of Grave of the Fireflies. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $29.98.
