The good folks at Latino Review have scored some images (including the main poster and three character one-sheets) from the upcoming CGI animated flick Happily N'Ever After. You can check them out over here.

Animation wise, this flick is closer to Hoodwinked than Pixar if you know what I mean. Strictly third-rate CGI work. Plot-wise, I'm going to reserve my opinion until I actually see this thing. Here's the synopsis, lifted from IMDb: "An alliance of evil-doers, led by Frieda (Sigourney Weaver), looks to take over Fairy Tale Land. But when Ella (Sarah Michelle Gellar) realizes her stepmother is out to ruin her storybook existence, she takes a dramatic turn and blossoms into the leader of the resistance effort."

The fact that Shrek producer John H. Williams is behind this movie tells you a lot about where Happily N'Ever After is coming from. So yeah, expect a lot of the self-referential fairy tale shenanigans that made both Shrek movies such monstrous hits (of course, that assumes that movies actually make any money; just ask Forrest Gump's producers).

As you may know, DreamWorks is in the middle of fine-tuning Shrek the Third for next summer, and Hoodwinked became a hit by mining similar territory (hard not to be, considering how little Hoodwinked cost to make). So that tells movie studios that there is gold for non-DreamWorks companies in them thar fairy-tale hills. On the other hand, the Great Animation Glut of 2006 looks to spill over into next year as even more movie studios, ignoring some of the failures of last year, jump into the CGI game. It looks like Happily N'Ever After will stand (or fall) based on its merits. Considering that Williams also has the box office bomb Valiant to his name, this movie's fate is very uncertain.

Happily N'Ever After hits theatres January 5, 2007.
