Jennifer Davidson, the senior vice-president of programming and scheduling at the Cartoon Network, died unexpectedly Saturday morning of a sudden illness at a hospital near her home in Atlanta. She was 38.

A Shining Star

"We have lost a shining star, not only at Cartoon Network, but within our industry," said Stuart Snyder, executive vice-president and chief operating officer for Turner Broadcasting System Inc.'s Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media group, in a statement Monday.

Davidson left behind her husband John and three children: Mitchell (aged 7), Oliver (aged 5) and Harper (aged 2). She also left behind her parents, John and Bobbie Stitt, two sisters, a brother and her extended family.

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1969. In 1991, she graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Communications. She joined the Cartoon Network in 1992 as a production/operations assistant and operations coordinator/manager. She was one of the first 15 employees hired by the brand new company.

She rose steadily through the ranks, becoming the vice-president of marketing, ad trade, consumer products trade and strategic operations for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim in 2002. Before then, she was the executive producer for Boomerang, the Cartoon Network's spin-off channel for classic cartoons.

She later oversaw the team that launched Adult Swim as a separate programming entity aimed at young adults.

Davidson an Award Winner

Davidson won several industry and marketing awards for her work at CN, including a 2000 BDA Gold Award for Boomerang's total package design. Earlier this year, she was named as a 2007-08 Betsy Magness Leadership Fellow.

In September, she was promoted to her current position as senior vice-president of programming and scheduling at the Cartoon Network

"We at WICT were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Jennifer Davidson," said Women in Cable Telecommunications CEO Benita Fitzgerald Mosley in a statement. "Jennifer was a beloved member of Class XVI of the Betsy Magness Leadership Institute, and her strength and passion will live on in the hearts of her classmates and those of us who knew her.

"Jennifer embodied the spirit of the smart, strategic risk takers who have gone before her and serves as a beacon for the next generation of fearless women. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jennifer's family, friends and co-workers during this difficult time."

In lieu of flowers, her family has asked for donations to three charitable causes that Davidson supported during her lifetime: the Fragile X Research Foundation, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and BrightPoint for Children.
