Judge remains in Cinar caseCinar lawyers drop contempt charges in exchange for keeping judge
Former Cinar head Ronald Weinberg halts attempt to remove Judge Andre Denis from presiding over his embezzlement case. Cinar lawyers drop contempt of court charges.
(Source: www.bcdb.com) Former Cinar co-founder Ronald A. Weinberg has abandoned his attempts to recuse the judge supervising his embezzlement trial. The decision comes after Cinar's lawyers dropped contempt charges against the former CEO for failing to appear in court three times since October of 2006. "This decision attests of a strong will not to unduly delay proceedings," said Weinberg's lawyer Jean Lozeau. The barrister also says this means there is no longer any reason to try and have Judge Andre Denis removed from the case. Weinberg has also agreed to completely disclose his global financial assets to the court this Friday. Weinberg and his late wife Micheline Charest founded Cinar in 1976 as a foreign film distributor. The company found great success when they developed such award-winning animated titles as Arthur, Caillou and The Busy World of Richard Scarry. In 2002, Charest and Weinberg were each fined $1 million and banned from their own corporation, as a result of a financial scandal. Cinar was renamed Cookie Jar Entertainment in 2004, under the management of former Nelvana founder Michael Hirsh. The new management is suing Weinberg for $110 million, claiming he and Charest embezzled $59 million from Cinar and placed it in the Bahamas.
