Fast food and movie giants agree to a "non-exclusive" partnership. McDonalds will promote Dreamworks' Shrek 3 in 2007.
Source:BYU News) McDonalds and Disney have agreed to have an open marriage when it comes to cross-promotional agreements. "While our contract with them will expire at the end of the year, we look forward to a more flexible, non-exclusive relationship where we will be working with them on a case-by-case basis," claimed a Walt Disney press release. The original agreement meant that McDonalds paid Disney $100 million a year in royalties, and promoted 11 movies, videos, theme parks, and TV shows. The old agreement will still cover two upcoming movies: Pixar's Cars and the live-action Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Both companies claimed that future cross-promotions are likely. Both sides also categorically denied that concerns over possible "Big Food" lawsuits played any part in the decision. "The 10-year McDonald's/Disney alliance is ending for sound business reasons on both sides," said McDonalds spokeswoman Lisa Howard. "This was a mutual decision made more than a year ago - a fact that is well known in the business world." Instead, the companies said that difficulties with aligning promotions with film release dates contributed to the breakup. McDonalds also claimed that some franchisees were unhappy with Disney's recent box-office performance. McDonalds signed an agreement with DreamWorks Animation SKG to promote 2007's "Shrek 3." It will be the start of a two-year worldwide contract between the two companies.
