Meet the Robinsons stays in the Top 5 but hasn't made the $100 million mark yet.
(Source: www.boxofficemojo.com) Disney's Meet the Robinsons is riding high in an underwhelming April, but it still hasn't quite made the magic $100 million mark at the box office. The Stephen J. Anderson fable, about a 12-year-old boy who takes a thrill ride into the future, slid two spots to #5 this past weekend, taking in another $7 million at the box office. That's less than $2,000 more than the live-action Brit comedy Hot Fuzz, which opened in approximately 1/3 of Meet the Robinsons' theatres. So far, the Disney animated flick has pulled $82 million in its 4 weeks on the silver screen, which is well below average for an animated flick coming from the Mouse House. Barring a sudden miracle, it's highly doubtful that Meet the Robinsons will crack the $100 million zone before mid-May, when the big summer movies start rolling into theatres. In other underperforming news, Warner Bros. / Imagi's TMNT continued its slide to #19, raking in another $96,000 in theatres. This brings its 5-week total to an underwhelming $52 million. Certainly Warner Bros' executives are thanking God, Allah and Cthulhu that they managed to keep the movie's costs so low ($35 million plus promotion). As low as TMNT's fortunes have sunk, they're positively rosy next to the box office returns shown by the dud otherwise known as Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. The First Look feature is positively bombing in its limited run, making a highly-appropriate $911,000 last weekend, and sitting at #20. This brings Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters' 2-week total to a miserable $4.7 million. Just in case you're wondering, that's 2/3 of what Meet the Robinsons pulled last weekend. I believe it's safe to say that Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters will not be seeing a wide release anytime soon, and may get put out of theatre owners' misery in very short order. Wondering what animated features are coming to theatres in the next few weeks? Well, it's gonna be quiet until mid-May, when all you-know-what breaks loose. That's otherwise known as the summer season, and that means the big movies, big guns, big bangs and big dumb fun. May 18th is the first salvo in the Great Animated Wars of Summer. That's when DreamWorks bows a little flick they like to call Shrek the Third. Then we'll have to wait until June, when we get some debuts from Sony Picture Classics, Fox and the mighty Pixar.
