The Nationals Film Board of Canada celebrates World Animation Day (October 28th) by holding coast-to-coast screenings, workshops and master classes.

Given the classic Canadian disdain for all things homegrown, it's no surprise that the National Film Board of Canada doesn't get nearly the props it deserves. The revered animation unit is nothing less than a world-class success story, with 4,500 awards to its credit including 90 Genies, 12 Oscars, and 69 Oscar nominations. And then there's Norman McLaren . . .

Well, the NFB is trying to raise its homegrown profile by promoting October 28th as World Animation Day.

From October 22nd to 28th, the Board will host a multitude of coast-to-coast screenings and workshops, many of which are in the presence of master filmmakers such as Madame Tutli-Putli directors directors Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, Cauchemar à l’école's Catherine Arcand, plus a master class with Quebec filmmaker Patrick Bouchard (Les Ramoneurs Cérébraux, Dehors Novembre).

The workshops will happen across Canada, in Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver. And, best of all, they're free.

"October 28 is World Animation Day!" exclaimed the NFB on its site. "To mark the occasion, the National Film Board of Canada will present Get Animated! with screenings of recent films, fascinating workshops and a chance to meet filmmakers and discover animation in all its forms."
