Nickelodeon Animation festival gives awards to aspiring animators

The Nicktoons Network Animation Festival announced the first group of award winners, including the Student, Diversity and Producer's Choice awards.

The Nicktoons Network Animation Festival gave out their initial batch of awards on Sunday (for background information, click here). Their choices are below, along with what each winner received.

- Student Award: Libraryhead by David Bazelon, Los Angeles.

Prize: $1,000 awarded to honour one student for excellence in animation, story and design to encourage the next generation of animators. Eligibility is based on current enrollment in a college or university animation program.

- Diversity Award: Crocodile Journals by Yeo Lee Nah, Singapore.

Prize: $1,000 awarded to the filmmaker whose film best demonstrates the ideals of diversity in subject and content.

- Producers' Choice Award: A Great Big Robot From Outer Space Ate My Homework by Mark Shirra, Vancouver, British Columbia.

Prize: A copy of Bauhaus Software's digital 2D animation software, Mirage, along with an Apple Power Mac G5, awarded to the filmmaker whose work catches the hearts and minds of the Festival Producers.

- Show Off Your Show/Greater Creator Award: Richard Wallace, Chino Hills, California (age 15) wins an exclusive Nicktoons Network "Future Animator" Prize package: A trip with his family to Los Angeles to visit the Nicktoons Studios and the chance to record his voice and be in a Kappa Mikey episode. The winner also receives an afternoon Animation Academy at his school.

Also, any filmmaker with a short in the "Best of 2006" episode (which airs on August 31, the last night of the festival) gets a copy of 2-D animation software Toon Boom Studio Express, and a bundle of training DVDs from Digital-Tutors.

The festival will present the $10,000 Grand Prize winner on-air on Nicktoons Network at 10 p.m. Thursday, August 31. NNAF will announce the Viewer's Choice Award online at nicktoonsnetwork.com on Monday, September 18. Voting closes on Friday, September 15.

Until then, website visitors can view selected animation shorts, animator information and biographies, and download the festival program. Visitors can also view the competing shorts, and vote for their favourite.
