Odd Job Jack NominatedWriters Jeremy Diamond and Tim Polley Up for Canadian Comedy Award
Comedy Central's Odd Job Jack has been nominated for the Writers Series category at the Canadian Comedy Awards.
Jeremy Diamond and Tim Polley of Odd Job Jack have been nominated for the “Writing Series” category at the Canadian Comedy Awards. Diamond is also one of the show’s producers. Odd Job Jack follows the misadventures of Jack Ryder (voiced by Don McKellar), a sociology graduate who works at a variety of bizarre jobs through a temp agency. In the first season, Jack suffered through such job experiences as being a mortuary worker, rodent wrangler on the set of a James Bond-esque movie produced entirely with rodents, and a tree-planter in Bigfoot country. Jack also worked as a waiter in a fancy restaurant where something was definitely wrong in the kitchen, a security guard in a high-tech firm, an Eighties-style business executive in a take-over company, and a Christian theme-park employee. Each episode ended with Jack adding another chapter to his book, in which he is detailing his experiences. Veteran actor McKellar often pokes fun at himself in the show, portraying himself as a vain, superficial, role-hungry actor. One episode parodied the 1999 live-action movie Being John Malkovich, where Jack digs a tunnel leading from his kitchen into McKellar’s ego. Originally billed as “the world’s first sit.com,” Odd Job Jack quickly moved from the Internet to cable television, appearing on the Comedy Network in Canada, and on Adult Swim in Latin America. It’s now in its fourth season. Odd Job Jack has some fairly stiff competition in the Writing Series category. It’s going up against sit-com Corner Gas (Writers: Brent Butt, Paul Mather, Mark Farell, Kevin White, Andrew Carr, and Robert Sheridan), Rent-a-Goalie (writers: Christopher Bolton, Graeme Manson), long-running comedy institution Royal Canadian Air Farce (Writer: Craig Lauzon) and new sensation Little Mosque on the Prairie (Writers: Zarqa Nawaz, Al Roe, Susan Flanders-Alexander, Dan Redican, Rebecca Schechter, and Jackie May). Fun Fact 1: Odd Job Jack has had a fair number of celebrity cameos. A number of Canadian celebrities such as Megan Follows (Ann of Green Gables), Christopher Plummer, Catherine O’Hara, The Barenaked Ladies, Scott Thompson, Rick Mercer, Leslie Nielson, Dave Foley, and Tom Green have appeared on the show. International figures like Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, John Goodman, Tom Arnold, James Woods, and the late comedy legend Don Knotts also lent their voices to the series. Fun Fact 2: The Canadian Comedy Awards have been caught in controversy, with many people feeling that the awards are too “Toronto-centric,”so much so that the show has been sometimes referred to as the “Toronto Comedy Awards.” There have also been complaints about the lack of representation of comedians from Quebec.
