Adult Swim gains rights to all 45 original episodes of Pee-Wee's Playhouse. Show won 22 Emmy Awards during 5-year run.
(Source: Toon Zone) Adult Swim, The Cartoon Network's late-night sister network, announced that they have acquired the broadcast rights for Pee-Wee's Playhouse, the classic live-action/cartoon/stop-motion hybrid that revitalized children's programming in the 1980's. The show will air at 11 pm, Monday through Thursday, starting July 10. It will also feature the rarely-seen Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special. Pee-Wee's Playhouse originally aired on CBS, beginning September 13, 1986, and made Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Rubens a star. It featured appearances from Phil Hartman, Natasha Lyonne, Lawrence Fishburne and music from Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh, Dweezil Zappa, <The Simpsons composer Danny Elfman, Stanley Clarke and P-Funk ringleader George Clinton. Rubens also parlayed his Pee-Wee persona into two successful live action films, 1985's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and 1988's Big Top Pee-Wee. CBS abruptly cancelled Pee-Wee's Playhouse in 1991 following Ruben's arrest for indecent exposure at a porno theatre in Sarasota, Florida.
