You may not have heard of Peter Hawkins, but you definitely heard him. He was a highly versatile voice actor, who did everything from narrating Bleep and Booster to voicing the villainous Daleks on Doctor Who.
Hawkins was born on April 3, 1924, the son of a police inspector. He first began acting in school, then in troop productions while serving with the Royal Navy during World War II.
He first broke into voice acting in the 1950's, when he voiced various characters for the BBC puppet series The Woodentops, and the character of Mr. Turnip for Whirligig. He also worked on another 1950's puppet show, The Flowerpot Men.
In 1957, he was asked to do all the voices for Captain Pugwash, a pirate cartoon series that ran until 1966. He also did voices roles on Tomfoolery, The Adventures of Sir Prancelot (another series where he did all the voices), The Perishers, The Family-Ness, and Jimbo and the Jet Set.
He also worked on Doctor Who during the show's early years. He was the original voice for the Daleks, as well as the Cybermen.
Hawkins worked in live-action, serving 3 seasons with the sketch-comedy show Dave Allen at Large. He performed such characters as a cone-headed bishop, Friar Tuck, and the captain of a Mexican firing squad.
He married Rosemary Miller in 1956, and his son Silas is a noted voice actor as well.
