Comedian Robert Smigel, best known as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, is working with 20th Century Fox TV to develop the animated television series Animals. The show is billed as an animal-kingdom parody of suburban American life. Smigel will write and executive produce the show, along with Greg Cohen (King of the Hill) and Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company.

Smigel worked with Sandler on Saturday Night Live during the early 1990's. Smigel later became the first head writer for NBC's Late Night With Conan O'Brien, where he worked with Greg Cohen. He also worked with Cohen on Comedy Central's TV Funhouse, in between cameos in most of Sandler's live-action comedies, including Billy Madison and Punch-Drunk Love.

It's believed that Animals, if successful, will become the fifth animated show on Fox's Sunday night line-up, joining The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy and American Dad.

The only live-action show currently on that line-up is The War at Home. It has the lowest ratings of any show on the programming block, 3 million viewers less than its lead-in, Family Guy.
