Ronnie Stevens, the veteran British comedy and voice-over actor, died last Saturday, aged 81.

Live-action fans will best remember Stevens as Grandpa Charles James in the 1998 remake of Disney's The Parent Trap, starring Lindsay Lohan.

Born September 2, 1925 in Peckham, Stevens got his start in theatre, acting in such West End productions as I'm All Right, Jack (opposite Peter Sellers) and Dentist in the Chair (with Bob Monkhouse).

He was also a noted voice actor, having performed in many animated and puppet shows since narrating the animated cut-out series Noggin the Nog. That show first ran on BBC-1 from 1959 to 1965, and was later revived for BBC-2 in 1982.

Stevens voiced the roles of Hoppity, Mr. Brown, Shaggy and the Junk Man in the 1962 puppet show Sara and Hoppity.

He later voiced the roles of Slim, Husky and Prof. Haggarty in Space Patrol, from 1963 to 1964. When the show was released in the U.S., the name was changed to Planet Patrol to avoid confusion with the 1950's live-action series of the same name.

His last voice gig was also in 1998, when he appeared in the BAFTA-nominated animated short, Tony Collingwood's Rarg.

He died in Denville Hall, the actor's retirement home in Northwood, Middlesex. His wife Anne predeceased him, and he is survived by his two sons.
