Remembering animator Sheila Rae Brown, who worked on films like Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Home on the Range and Tom and Jerry: The Movie.

Sheila Rae Brown, an animator who worked on several Disney films from 1988 to 2004, died January 17 of cancer. She was 71.

Brown was born May 26, 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from California State University, Northridge before starting work in the animation industry.

Her first prominent work in animation was as a background artist for Hanna-Barbera on such television shows as Shazzan! (1967), The Adventures of Gulliver (1968), and The Harlem Globetrotters (1970).

Brown also worked on Filmation Associates TV productions like Heckle and Jeckle (1969), The New Adventures of Batman (1977), The Young Sentinels (1977), The New Adventures of Flash Gordon (1979), Quackula (1979), The New Adventures of Tom and Jerry (1980) and Droopy (1980).

In the 1980's, Brown switched to the Mouse House, where she was an assistant animator on Oliver and Company (1988) and also worked on 1989's The Little Mermaid.

She then went to Hyperion Pictures, where she was a character animator on Rover Dangerfield (1991), and also worked on Film Roman's Tom and Jerry: The Movie (1992).

Brown returned to Disney in the late 1990's, where she received special thanks for her involvement in Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Treasure Planet (2002) and Home on the Range (2004).

She is survived by her brother Stephen, among others. Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.
