FUNimation, hoping that the Cartoon Network will pick up Crayon Shin-Chan for regular rotation on its Adult Swim programming block, recently held a poll so that fans could vote for their favourite lines from the show. The company recently made a video montage of the top 5 contenders (based on Shin-Chan's August test run on Adult Swim) and posted it on YouTube.
Not being able to see an English dub (and Teletoon not daring to bring Shin-Chan to Canadian viewers), I haven't had the chance to see what all the fuss was about. However, lines like "Ass dance! Ass dance!" and "Hima, did you take the one pleasure in Mommy's life that doesn't involve a detachable shower head?" told me two things:
1) If the rest of Crayon Shin-Chan is this funny, I think we have a winner.
2) Now I understand why this sucker is on Adult Swim, despite it being originally marketed for Japanese children. It's not just the controversial English overdubbing: many of the situations have a raunchier mindset than adults and censors are willing to see on North American children's TV.
That said, this show seems closer in spirit to Calvin and Hobbes than The Simpsons or South Park. Shin-Chan's hijinks come from a more innocent place, and his behaviour seems more genuine than the smart-aleck kids one suffers through in sit-coms (sit-comas?).
