Sixteen for animation OscarFull slate of finalists for 2006 Oscar for Best Animated movie
The Great CG Glut of 2006 carries over into Oscar nominations, as sixteen movies have been short-listed for Best Animated Feature Film.
(Source: www.bcdb.com) For the first time since 2002, Oscar voters may see a full slate of five candidates for Best Animated Film. So far there are 16 (yep, 16) movies shortlisted for the honour, that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have to work through so that only 5 finalists will be on deck for the 79th Annual Academy Awards coming up on February 25, 2007. Here are the candidates so far: - Warner Bros.' The Ant Bully - MGM/Weinstein Company's Arthur and the Minimoys (Arthur and the Invisibles in the U.S.) - Paramount's Barnyard: The Original Party Animals - Disney/Pixar's Cars - Universal's Curious George - Fox's Everyone's Hero - DreamWorks/Aardman's Flushed Away - Fox/Warner Bros.' Happy Feet - Fox's Ice Age: The Meltdown - Sony Picture Animation's Monster House - Sony's Open Season - DreamWorks' Over The Hedge - Sony's Paprika - The Weinstein Company's Renaissance - Warner Independent Picture's A Scanner Darkly - Disney's The Wild Gee, I wonder who will get into the Final Five? (Here's a hint: it has to do with how much cabbage each studio is willing to throw at the Academy) My guess (on that criteria) is that Cars, Barnyard, Over the Hedge, Ice Age: The Meltdown and Open Season will get the nod. All those movies did well at the box office (an important factor), and they're all from the big studios. Flushed Away might get some consideration if it keeps rocking the box office, especially since its predecessor, Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit, took Oscar gold last year. However, with the bad blood currently between DreamWorks and Aardman Animation, DreamWorks will probably opt to promote their Over the Hedge instead. Similar situation for Fox: even if Happy Feet makes major buckage, the studio already has a gold-plated candidate in Ice Age: The Meltdown, which was one of the few unalloyed hits this year. Keep in mind that there has to be 16 shortlisted movies for there to be the 5 candidates on Oscar night, and all 16 have had to have been shown in Los Angeles before the January deadline. Arthur and the Minimoys, Happy Feet, and Paprika haven't had their premieres yet. If they fail to do so, then they're dismissed from competition and there will be only three or four movies in contention. The five finalists will be announced on January 23rd, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.
