DC Comics is looking at Marvel's successful direct-to-DVD animated flicks and saying, "I can do that." And they're starting off with a bang. DC's first movie, released on September 18th, will be Superman: Doomsday, an adaptation of the extremely popular "Superman is Dead" storyline. Due to its content, the DVD will receive a PG-13 rating. It will be released through Warner Home Video.
Adam Baldwin (Firefly) will voice the role of Superman, while Anne Heche (Donnie Brasco) will take on Lois Lane. James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) will voice Lex Luthor.
In addition to the 75-minute movie, the DVD will also contain more than 70 minutes of bonus features, interviews, a "making of" featurette and a preview of the next DC animated feature. It will have an MSRP of $19.99.
Superman: Doomsday will be the first in a series of three direct-to-DVD animated movies coming from the company. The next titles in the series will include an adaptation of Darwyn Cooke's Eisner Award-winning mini-series DC: The New Frontier and Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. In order to be more true to the original comics, these DVD releases will also be PG-13. There are as yet no release dates for either flick, but they're expected to hit shelves in late 2007 or early 2008.
Ain't It Cool News reported that David Boreanaz (Angel) will voice Hal Jordan in DC: The New Frontier and Brooke Shields (Suddenly Susan) will voice the role of Carol Ferris, Jordan's love interest.
DC's Bruce Timm, who is overseeing the first three movies, said at WorldCon that six more direct-to-DVD adaptations are in the works and will be greenlit if the first three are successful.
Marvel's direct-to-DVD adaptations have done very well for the company. The company's second movie, Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise of the Panther, debuted at #5 during the week of August 13th, 2006, according to Neilson VideoScan.
