Surf's Up Slides to FiveSony Animated Movies Makes $9.2 million in its 2nd Week
Surf's Up barely hangs in the Top Five, making $9.2 million in its second week in theatres. It stands above DreamWorks' Shrek the Third, which is at #6.
(Source: www.boxofficemojo.com) (Writer's Note: You're probably wondering why I write these stories on Tuesday, instead of Monday, when everyone else talks about box office. That's because the entire list comes out on Tuesday, and I can talk about those poor animated flicks currently inhabiting the bottom end of the chart.) Surf's Up continues to under-perform at the box office, making another $9.2 million in its second week. That gives the Sony Pictures Animation flick a grand total of $34.6 million after two weeks. Considering the stunning number of reviewers who have given 'thumbs-up' to this flick (Rotten Tomatoes has given Surf's Up its "Certified Fresh" award), it's obvious that the old adage "great reviews don't always mean great box office" still holds true. Shrek the Third is hanging in at #6, adding another $9 million to its already copious coffers. After five weeks in theatres, it's already closing in on the magical $300 million mark, sitting at $297.2 million. Those are some fierce numbers, but Shrek the Third still trails its predecessor by a wide margin. As I've said before, when that predecessor is the third biggest box office grosser of all time, right behind Titanic and Star Wars, that's not necessarily that bad. Shrek 4 and Shrek 5 have already been greenlit (I guess Jeffrey Katzenberg wasn't about to listen to advice from myself and/or JoBlo when you're talking that kind of cash), plus a Shrek the Halls Christmas special and a Broadway musical. Will we see Shrek 6 and 7, plus various prequels and comic books? Since DreamWorks Animation is all about creating and marketing franchises, I wouldn't be at all surprised. Looking farther down the chart, Sony's other animated offering Paprika is sitting at #33, making $83,000 in its 4th weekend. Considering it's only in 30 theatres, that's not so bad but it's obvious Sony doesn't think this flick has a chance in wide release. Considering the notices this movie has been getting ( a 91% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes!), that's a shame that Sony doesn't think it'll go over with North American audiences. Look for it on DVD, kids. At #36 sits Disney's Meet the Robinsons. As I've mentioned once or twice before, this flick has pretty much stalled below the $100 million mark, sitting at $96.2 million. That's still better than Warner/Imagi's TMNT, which is stalled at $54 million. Here's ye compleat list of animated films currently infesting –, okay occupying – the box office. 5) Surf's Up (Sony Pictures Animation): $9,254,793 ($34,625,490 after 2 weeks) 6) Shrek the Third (DreamWorks Animation): $9,003,044 ($297,245,100 after 5 weeks) 33) Paprika (Sony Pictures Classics): $83,189 ($340,531 after 4 weeks) 36) Meet the Robinsons (Walt Disney Company): $63,182 ($96,287,733 after 12 weeks) 47) TMNT (Warner/Imagi): $32,850 ($54,132,596 after 13 weeks)
