Animation of of Ursula K. Le Guin novel finished on May 23.
(Source:nausicaa.net) Studio Ghibli announced the completion of animation on the upcoming feature film based on Ursula K. Le Guin's Tales from Earthsea. The movie is scheduled for a July 2006 release in Japan, and Disney has already secured the North American distribution rights. This film marks the directorial debut of Goro Miyazaki, son of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki. Producer Toshio Suzuki asked Goro to direct the movie after he drew the storyboards. The film will be based on Volume 3 of Le Guin's short story series, The Farthest Shore. Author Le Guin has been notoriously reluctant to allow any movie adaptation of her classic Earthsea novels. She had turned down all previous offers, including one from Studio Ghibli, but relented after Miyazaki met with her after the premiere of Howl's Moving Castle. Ghibli pointed out that animation on Tales from Earthsea took 8 months and 17 days to complete. This was a shorter production time than both 2005's Howl's Moving Castle (17 months and 6 days) and 2001's Spirited Away (16 months and 26 days). It has been reported that Goro and his father are no longer on speaking terms. The rift occurred when Hayao publicly stated that his son lacked the necessary experience to direct a full-length feature film.
