Review: The Marvelous Misadventures of FlapjackFormer Cartoon Network Wedgie Makes its Way to Thursday Prime Time
Flapjack is a young, naive boy who loves going on adventures and doing anything for the sake of adventuring. Absolutely ANYTHING for an adventure.
Originally one of Cartoon Network's Wedgies, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack has found its way to Cartoon Network's prime Thursday night spot. The cartoon is very fresh with ideas and wit and is starkly different from most of the other shows in Cartoon Network's repertoire. Have a taste for high seas adventure? So does Flapjack... but he rarely leaves the docks. What It's AboutFlapjack is a young, overly optimistic sailor who was raised by a loving, sass-talking whale named Bubbie. He thirsts to be an adventurer of the high seas and will do anything as long as it is the name of adventure or becoming an adventurer. It's pretty much for this reason alone that he even hangs out with (worships) self-proclaimed Captain K'nuckles. It's hard to say if Captain K'nuckles likes Flapjack half as much as Flapjack likes him. He seems to only like Flapjack because Flapjack will do anything K'nuckles tells him to do and believes anything he says. He probably also likes Flapjack, because he can live in Bubbie's mouth with Flapjack at Stormalong docks for free. Also, if he finds a lead for the mysterious Candied Island, he can talk Flapjack into using Bubbie for the voyage instead of finding a ship. Finding Adventure AnywhereCaptain K'nuckles claims to be a seasoned adventurer, but it's not really known about how much of his tall tales are true. But Flapjack believes them, and he desperately wants Captain K'nuckles to take him on such a grand adventure. K'nuckles often uses Flapjack's love for adventurering to get Flapjack to do anything K'nuckles does not want to do. If K'nuckles tells Flapjack that a menial task will make him an adventurer or that a task is a part of an adventure, Flapjack will do it gleefully, whether the task is swabbing decks, picking up candy wrappers, or even making enemies on purpose. Despite K'nuckles' taste for adventure, K'nuckles only takes Flapjack on adventures that have to do with finding Candied Island, the mystical island made of candy. If it isn't about Candied Island or candy, K'nuckles isn't interested in leaving Stormalong docks, no matter how much Flapjack begs to go on an adventure. However, Flapjack often finds plenty of adventuring at Stormalong docks. Whether it's posing as a beard for a beard contest, riding in the trolley car, or helping Peppermint Larry find his inner pun comedian, Flapjack learns that practically anything can be an adventure. Humor and Adventures Fun for All AgesAdults and children both will find plenty of laugh out loud moments with this show. The humor is slapstick for the kids and has some wit adults will enjoy just as much. Every episode ends with a valuable lesson learned, so parents can rest assured that their children will be learning something aside from how to eat a barrel full of candy. As a word of caution, be prepared for an interesting art style that dabbles into the disgusting and sometimes disturbing. New episodes air every Thursday night on Cartoon Network at 8:30 p.m. EST.
