The Simpsons movie trailer!

In a time when animated movies are suffering from a serious lack of originality (a malaise that's been gripping Hollywood in general for some time now), it's nice to see some trailers that break from the pack and have a little fun promoting their movies. Of course, being Hollyweird, the pack will shortly follow in slavering pursuit, but allow us the illusion for a few minutes.

Pixar was the first to actually have trailers for movies that didn't actually have any film footage. It was a smart move that promoted their flicks without giving away all the best bits. A couple of weeks ago, Jerry Seinfeld went even farther, shooting a live-action teaser for his upcoming DreamWorks animated flick Bee Movie. It was a ballsy move that actually spoofed the conventions of how animation was made. And now, we have the trailer for The Simpsons Movie, with Moe the Bartender (Hank Azaria) proudly proclaiming "in 2-D."

Beginning with a CG pastoral sequence set to Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" and ending with Homer screwing up in typically grand fashion, this trailer had me laughing my you-know-what off. My prognosis? If the rest of this flick is as good as this trailer, I suggest cinema-goers bring a spare change of underwear.
