In a move that surprised absolutely no one, The Simpsons took home the award for Best Animated Episode for the 9th time. The show, which also holds the record for longest-running animated show and longest-running American-made TV series, won for the episode, "The Seemingly Never-Ending Story."

This year courted controversy, since The Simpsons' main competition was South Park's "Trapped in the Closet," which mocked actor Tom Cruise and the celebrity-endorsed Scientology cult. However, Emmy's tendency towards risk-taking was expended by merely nominating the episode.

The Simpsons producer Al Jean alluded to the controversy in his acceptance speech, "This is what happens when you don't mock Scientology."

Nancy Cartwright (who voices Bart Simpson), is an active member of the cult.

This also means that executive producer James L. Brooks gets his 19th Emmy award. Brooks, who also worked on Taxi, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Andy Griffith Show, has broken the record for most Emmys won by a single person.
