In a year where animated TV comedies popped out of the woodwork, three old favourites got nominated for Best Animated TV comedy.

In a ceremony hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Isaiah Washington and Kate Walsh, The Family Guy, King of the Hill and The Simpsons were the only cartoon nominees for the People's Choice Awards. The nominations for the 33rd annual awards were announced Tuesday at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills.

All three shows are part of Fox's Sunday night animation line-up.

The Family Guy is the relative newcomer of the pack. It originally debuted on Fox in 1999, and was removed due to low ratings, the first time in 2000, the second time in 2002. A grassroots fan campaign, in combination with strong DVD sales and a successful run on the Cartoon Network, led Fox to return the show to the airwaves.

King of the Hill first showed in 1997, and has become the second longest continuously-running animated show in television history. Mike Judge (Idiocracy, Office Space) created the show after his successful animated series Beavis and Butthead finished its run on MTV.

Since its debut in 1989, The Simpsons has become the longest-running American sit-com and the longest-running American animated TV show. It has won an unprecedented 23 Emmy Awards, 23 Annie Awards, and a Peabody Award. The long-awaited feature-length film The Simpsons Movie is scheduled to hit theatres on July 27, 2007.

The People's Choice Awards broadcast will show on CBS. The ceremony will occur at the Shrine Auditorium on January 9, 2007.
