Cowboy doll Woody struggles with jealousy after his owner Andy's affections turn to a slick new action figure, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear.

In Toy Story, children’s toys have secret lives whenever they are not being watched or played with. They love their owners and want nothing more than to be played with forever. Toy Story follows a group of toys owned by a young boy named Andy whose family is preparing to move house.

Toy Story's Plot and Characters

Woody (voice by Tom Hanks) is his owner Andy’s favourite toy. That is until Andy’s birthday when he receives a Buzz Lightyear (voice by Tim Allen). Woody is an old fashioned cowboy doll whereas Buzz is a new toy with numerous features that quickly causes Woody to get replaced as Andy's favorite toy.

Buzz falls out of the window and Andy’s other toys gang up on Woody believing that he got rid of his competition. Knowing that he cannot go home without Buzz, Woody is forced to find Buzz and bring him back home. Unfortunately his efforts are complicated not only by Buzz’s belief that he is the real Buzz Lightyear instead of a toy but also when he and Buzz are found by Sid (Erik von Detten), a nasty local boy, who mutilates and destroys his toys.

Joining Woody and Buzz, the other toys include Mr Potato Head (Don Rickles), Slinky Dog (Jim Varney), Rex (Wallace Shawn) with Sarge (R. Lee Ermey) and Bo Peep (Annie Potts).

The First of its Kind

Toy Story was the first complete film to use nothing but computer animation, and is the bench mark by which all subsequent animations have been measured. Toy Story is a triumph of animation and storytelling. The idea of children’s toys having secret lives is exactly the kind of idea that every child would love. It is unlikely there aren’t children who believe that their toys aren't alive and play together when the child is not in the room.

The animation of the toys themselves is wonderful. The characters have different facial expressions, and personalities. Hanks and Allen shine as the voices of the jealous Woody and the popular Buzz. The rest of the toys have distinctive personalities, Rex is an inept and insecure Tyrannosaurus Rex, and Mr Potato Head is cynical and his facial features have a habit of being knocked off his face. Bo Peep is the toys’ voice of reason and also acts as Woody’s love interest.

Randy Newman provides the songs which all add to the feel good nature of the film.

As with all children’s films Toy Story is about overcoming adversity, loyalty and putting friends first. Toy Story was the first film of its kind and computer animations has since become one of the main mediums for telling children’s stories. Pixar has gone on to make many amazing films (including Finding Nemo and The Incredibles) however Toy Story will always be the bench mark, with its colourful characters and engaging story.

9/10

Children and adults alike will enjoy just love the charming characters of Toy Story and should not hesitate to track down a copy.
