Walt Disney Company CEO Robert Iger confirmed today that Pixar is going into production with Toy Story 3, the second sequel to the popular CG animation franchise. The first film, which starred Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as feuding toys, grossed $191,773,049 as of September 29th, 1996. Its sequel fared even better, raking in $245,823,397 as of July 16, 2000.

The rumoured plot for Toy Story 3 has Buzz Lightyear (Allen) sent back to Taiwan as part of a toy recall.

Disney, which purchased Pixar last Friday, looks to the studio to revive its animation line. Animation, which used to be the cornerstone of the world's second largest entertainment conglomerate, has shrunk in recent years. Disney's first foray into CG animation, Chicken Little, grossed $135,381,507. In comparison, The Incredibles, Pixar's last production for Disney, grossed $261,437,578 as of April 10, 2005.

Iger also hinted that sequels to other Pixar titles may follow, but that he was "being careful" so that quality isn't diminished. Short-lived Disney CG shop Circle 7 had been developing several sequels to Pixar films, but this was squashed after Disney bought Pixar.

UPDATE: The Incredibles 2 was actually in development, but director/mastermind Brad Bird was asked to replace Jan Pinkava on Ratatouille, putting the sequel indefinitely on hold. Thanks to joblo.com for the heads up.
