Media Blasters announced that they will release the first of 8 volumes of Voltron: Defender of the Universe on DVD, September 26. This first release will be a 3-DVD box set, containing 15 episodes of the original series. This is what VoltronDVD.com had to say about it:
"Voltron: Defender of the Universe has been planned for 8 DVD releases, each one containing three discs, approximately 15 episodes, and as many extras as we can squeeze in. We're preparing premium special edition packaging, an aggressive video restoration process, and remixed 5.1 audio. The goal is to make Voltron look better than it has ever looked before."
As far as extras are concerned, here's what the press release had to say:
"We will also present the original character sketches, designs, promos, TV ads, news footage, and other treasures from the 80's. On top of that, we will be creating all new extras with help from the original producers and staff . . . We plan to keep putting extras on the Voltron DVD's until the discs barely fit in the player."
This is obviously huge news for fans of the original series (which was the #1 animated show in 1984). The press release also claims a Voltron movie is in the works, produced by Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan) and Pharrell Williams (N.E.R.D.).
