Movies.com's Statler and Waldorf: From the Balcony gets retro fever.

I've been checking out episodes of Statler and Waldorf: From the Balcony for a while now. They're more a source of occasional chuckles than full-on guffaws. Each episode has some funny ideas, but they lack a certain spark that could take them over the top. It's a shame because the dissing duo were some of my favourite characters in the original Muppet Show. Perhaps they need to bring Fozzie back?

Anyway, this episode takes Statler and Waldorf imagines what the titular curmudgeons would have looked like as Swinging Seventies hipster dudes.

(Of course, if you really wanted to know what Statler and Waldorf looked like during the Disco Era, just drop The Muppet Show: Season 1 in your DVD player, but I digress.)

Of course, they get the usual back-in-time jokes going ("Close Encounters of the Third Kind will be Steven Spielberg's last aliens film. We guarantee it!"). There's an interview with Star Wars director George Lucas, where the interviewer "inadvertently" drops plot ideas, and a re-imagining of Close Encounters, featuring Woody Allen. Not half-bad, but not half-good either.

Check out Statler and Waldorf: From the Balcony here and decide for yourself. The next From the Balcony episode comes out September 2.
